There comes a time when the product sales just seem to dry up and you just can't seem to make a nickel. I have seen my share of recessions come and go ever since the 1930's. I was old enough to understand that my Dad just couldn't seem to get a job during that period in our history. We seem to have been in and out of these bad business cycles my entire life and yet I still know of companies that have ran successfully the entire time before, during and since the great depression. There are several reasons that these companies have always succeeded. The main reason is that they had products that were always in demand. They still faced competition like all of us do, but the smart companies always saw to it that they had an edge on the competition. Things that give you an edge are price, quality, customer service, brand recognition and a good strong marketing program. The simple fact is that you can offer the best products, prices and services in the world, but if people don't know you even exist then you are doomed to failure. Here at Battery Chem we are constantly researching for new marketing ideas. We especially look for ideas that will not cost our associates a fortune because we know that money is tight these days. So it really boils down to how hard are you willing to work to get those badly needed customers and accounts that you need to succeed? I would like to review what kinds of very basic things that you should be doing in order to market your products successfully. You need to establish a name, location, phone number and hopefully a web site for your new company and all this should go on a business card even if it takes both sides of the card to make it look professional enough. The name of the business should reflect what the business does. Like "Battery Service and Reconditioning" or "Battery Sales and Maintenance". I'm sure that you get the idea. There should also be Key words on your Web page so that Google's search engine will pick up on them. Here are some examples of Key words, separated by commas. Batteries, lead acid batteries, battery, reconditioning, maintenance, cars, buses, trucks, golf carts, electric forklifts, rebuilding, repairing, distilled water, repairs, service, etc. These key words draw customers to your pages; we put them on all of our videos too. When you make your web site be sure to put your full contact information and your photo on it. No one wants to deal with nameless, faceless suppliers or service people. Let us make a free video for you to place on You Tube and embed in your web page. Word of mouth is excellent. Hand everyone you meet a business card and tell them what you are doing. Ask them to pass the information along to their friends. Go to large warehouses and leave a card with the person in charge of paying the bills for their forklift fleet. You will quickly get their attention. These forklifts are highly subject to employee neglect. Sulfation, low water and undercharging are the leading causes of major battery failures. Do the same for golf cart and other equipment fleets of vehicles that depend on lead acid batteries for their efficient operation. Don't be afraid to talk to people because you are providing them a needed service that can save them thousands of dollars. As I always like to say, "Who doesn't like to save money"? Calling, mailings and face to face visits are the number one way to get new business. Believe me, when I was a young man and a shy country boy I had to force myself to do it, but it paid off. Business is not for the timid or the faint of heart. To summarize, tell everyone in sight who you are, what you do and where to find you. Be sure to make it clear that you will stand behind your product and your workmanship. If you keep your customers happy they will send you hundreds of new customers and if you don't keep them happy you will pay a heavy price. There are many shoppers' guides around with very low or free advertising rates in them. We have had good luck over the years with them. Your local Craigslist is an excellent source of sales leads. Also, any publication that reaches company owners or executives is a good bet because they are really concerned about the bottom line and you are offering to save them a great deal of money. An electric forklift battery can easily cost up to $8,000.00 dollars to replace and golf cart batteries can run up to $1,000.00 a set to replace. If you can afford it, you can try some ads on the local cable channels and radio stations However, I do not suggest spending too much money on radio and TV. If you can set up a booth at local trade shows and also sell Battery Repair kits at flea markets and swap meets it's not a bad way to go. There is a very strong do it yourself market out there that you can take advantage of. The main thing is to use your imagination to promote your products and services. We are writing this letter  to you because in the past you have either

Building Homes Using Surplus Steel Shipping Containers by Walt Barrett

There's a lot of talk about housing these days. Housing is very expensive and so is land.  Some of us in the inventors and manufactures community are constantly racking our brains for better ideas.  One of the ideas we have found that gives you the biggest bang for the buck is utilizing used steel shipping containers.  Some of them are even insulated for shipping refrigerated food etc.  I personally have spent a great deal of time thinking about containers and how to utilize them and it really is not that complicated.  The first objection that always come up is that a steel container makes a great solar oven.  This is true of course unless you keep the sun off it.  Many people do this by making earthen gardens on the roof.  Twelve inches of earth makes a great insulator and a pretty garden as a bonus.  You can also paint the exterior in any reflective color, or apply some kind of insulated siding, or ever grow ivy vines on the exterior, or all of the above.  You can can also bury a well designed container home in the ground.  As long as you make the proper provisions to prevent flooding.  Just think, no more tornado problems if you are several feet underground. Heating and cooling would become next to nothing because of the constant 55 degree temperature.  I would take very little solar for example to provide heat and the new LED solar lighting systems are dirt cheap to install. cooling would only take a very tiny air conditioner to remove the humidity from the air.   Many people will say they do not want to live under ground.  So just bury three sides in the side of a hill or berm and live a southern glass wall exposed.  I have also thought that I would buy the whole container with a concrete stairwell going down into a glass roofed atrium dug next to the container, or surrounds by four forty-foot containers.  This would be a great setup.  

Imagine your lot being just a lawn or garden or both with your home under it.  I also envision a large screen TV that also doubles as a window but mounting a 360 degree camera above ground.  

   The steel exterior would have rigid foam glued all over it to meet the local codes if there are any and you might consider surface mounted wiring on a painted interior as a big labor saver.  I would use solar electricity and make this home totally off the grid.  Our company has already built one above ground test bed micro home with standard type lumber. Now we are considering building a small Underground home as a test bed for our solar products, lighting systems and composting toilet products. Perhaps a 20' or 40' container size for a retired couple.  I could see an all DIY project for $10,000.00 carefully spent dollars. It could totally eliminate your worries about tornadoes if you live in one of those areas. We may never go commercial with these ideas, but we feel obligated to test them.  We have to develop more affordable housing and it also must be less expensive to heat and cool.  The ideas to accomplish this project are endless.  Walt Disney called it "Imagineering."  So set your mind free and imagine how to build something better in the affordable housing field.  It needs to be done.  You know the old saying, "Find a need and fill it!"

Our Students Can Defuse The Consumption Bomb by Walt Barrett

  I received a very well written letter the other day from a 18 year old high school senior who writes a heck of a lot better than I do, and that is for sure. I mean that letter really rocked and it cheered me up.  He actually thanked me for inspiring him about Green business and I felt cheered up after suffering four strokes already this year.  That will sure get you down. 
We are always complaining about the ability of  our younger generation to read, and write properly and God knows I make enough mistakes myself, but at least I try, lol.  Well anyway, I was really impressed by what the young man had to say concerning green businesses, and how he intended to explore the possibilities of incorporating green business ideas into his dad's repair shop to expand it.  He had a lot of good ideas, and I believe he will succeed.  So I was sitting here in my think tank this morning thinking about the massive consumption bomb that the world has been building for the last 5000 years, and the rate of growth is accelerating faster than a colony of earthworms, that is a geometric progression.  Well  it finally hit me that we can solve the problem the same way we are solving the smoking problem, and that is through our schools and more advertising.  Now we have the Internet  and it seems that young people spend much time there.  So we can start to introduce some little anti consumption ads on our web pages and blogs at no cost.  I'm working on a new blog called  (Green Living + Green Business = Green Pockets) That is the title of another blog I write. That title is going to be my national slogan for my green living campaign.  If we can persuade our students to consume less we will be doing them several large favors because living green does put more money in your pockets, and like I always say in my sales pitches, "Who doesn't want to save money?"  Prices are going higher and higher mostly because the high cost of fuel affects everything.  We should be making a point of this with our massive student population.  How about what green living does for you health?  Living longer and feeling better is an idea that captures the attention of most people.  "Live green, feel better, live longer"  I got a million of them folks! 
   A few examples of saving money.  Buying water is about $365.00 a year for one bottle a day, smoking $2500.00 a year, drinking beer $1200.00 a year, buying lunches instead of packing them $1000.00 a year up, wasting gasoline by wasting trips, easily $5.00 a day, driving a gas hog $20.00 a day or more.  These are just a few off hand items that I see every day.  Then, on top of that, if we can persuade them to recycle everything in sight that will be another huge savings.  Just think what a school system could do with the aluminum can money alone!  If I had my way there would never be a general trash pickup.  Everything would be recycle, and we would not ever send garbage, or leaves to a land fill.  We would send them to a loam factory/earthworm farm and grow the fresh food right there too. We compost everything.  We also have to cut down on the distances we ship products.  We should also be using more rail transportation costs.  Let the trucks haul from the rail yards to the local businesses etc. 
   So my point is that if we campaign more to our young people about this we are bound to make some progress with this massive consumption problem by attrition if nothing else. There are many young people who are already thinking about these problems and we should be encouraging them because everyone needs  encouraging.  We need to teach them to take a simple but scientific approach to this monster of a problem.  The students who listen will be the millionaires of the future 
Personally I have decided to do little print campaigns on all my web sites and blogs. I am depending on the students and I believe the students will defuse the population bomb.  What is your Idea?

Solar Lighting And Water Pumping And Micro Home KIts by Walt Barrett

   You are going to be hearing and reading a great deal more about micro homes in the near future as more, and more Americans lose their homes and struggle for new and less expensive solutions to their housing problems. It makes sense that if you decide to reexamine your whole way of life, which you should, and the type of home that you are going to live in, you might as well take a good look at your utilities. Lighting water, sewerage, and heating etc.  They cost money and green energy is far less expensive energy, especially in a micro home.   People have to survive and food, clothing, and shelter are at the top of the list.  Here at A to Z Global Marketing Inc. we have experience in the solar and alternate energy field going back for forty years.  Plus I grew up in a micro home.  We already know that if you are building a compact energy efficient home that you can heat it and light it cheaper than dirt.  Heating and the other utilities normally cost a great deal of money, but we have the products and the expertise to supply you with the items that you need to do the job properly.  We can also make your hot water for bathing, and all the other housekeeping chores cheaply with solar.  If you make enough solar hot water you can also heat with it in a tight little solar home. Getting your roof rafters laid out properly, and cut a the right angles is a super big time help right there alone by itself.  Mass produced pre-cut kits represent a huge savings in time too because most DIY folks only have weekends, holidays and evenings to build their projects. 
I suggest that it would be an all around good idea for beginners especially, to have a talk with me, or someone else with my experience before you jump into a micro home project.  There are many things to consider, and be sure to put it on a proper cold weather foundation so your pipes don't freeze.
